If you go to the What's Hot section of Seller Central at eBay, there are all sorts of resources there to help you figure out the best items to sell and even what to sell at any given time of the year.
For instance, eBay's Merchandising Calendar tells you the items that will be featured on their home page during certain times of the year. This is important because more people will be clicking through to these specific categories when they are featured. And if you have an item in one of those categories you could possibly get more traffic to your auction.
And one of the best tools that helps you figure out what sells best on eBay is the Hot Items by Category report that tells you the specific categories, how hot each category is and the hottest items in that category. You can access this report by going to the What's Hot page at Seller Central and clicking on Hot Items By Category on the left side menu.
You can also go to eBay Pulse to find the top 10 most popular keywords used in each specific category and eBay Pulse also lists the top 10 most watched items in those categories as well. Maybe you will find out you already have a hobby that is related to one or more of these popular items. That would be a good place to start your new business.
